Savoring the Season...

...It finally happened.  It snowed on the Winter Solstice!  How appropriate, considering the fact that the symbol for Winter Solstice is a snowflake.
This has been a lean year for most, so by mutual agreement my friends and I decided to not exchange gifts this year.  With no gifts wrapped to place under the Christmas tree it forces one to look to the truer meanings of the season.  As I look around I find myself appreciating the brilliant red cardinals that visit the feeding stations in my winter garden.  The holiday light displays cheer my soul and remind me of Christmases past. Walking in the parks on both warmer days and snowy days invigorates me.  Like a little kid I eagerly look for new discoveries along the trails.  Remembering that my friend's son-in-law was in Iraq, but is now home safe to spend this Christmas with all his family warms my heart.
Thinking about the families of the Sandy Hook tragedy, I send the gift of my prayers of comfort to their lives.  I am thankful that all my friends and family are alive and safe this Christmas.  As Christmas Eve approaches I am eagerly anticipating attending a candlelight service at church.  That's what the season is all about, the greatest gift.  The birth of Jesus is a most precious time to be celebrated not with a bunch of purchased gifts but with awe and respect.  Appreciating the fact that God sent His only Son to save us from our sin is a gift far greater than anything we could purchase from any store.  Most humbling...  And that is the real tone of this season, quiet humility and respect for the King of Kings.  If you find yourself frantically racing around to do a lot of overspending and too many obligations of entertaining, put on the brakes.  Be brave enough to tell everyone you aren't going to do all that same maddening stuff.  Inform everyone that you plan to keep it simple this year.  Slow it all down and make time to savor the Savior...

TO ALL MY FACEBOOK FAMILY AND EVERYONE WHO FOLLOWS MY BLOG, I WISH YOU A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!
