The Duty

...We always called it "the duty". Every Memorial Day my grandmother and mother took me along with them as they did the spring clean-up of the various family cemetery spots. They called it "dressing the graves". I was the next generation being taught to respectfully care for the family grave markers. Grandma always brought flowers from her garden and packed a basket with clippers, a scrub brush, copper cleaner and a jug of water. I learned by quietly watching what would one day be expected of me Over the years I went faithfully to the cemetery to perform the duty. Though I offered to take my cousins with me, they all declined the invitation. They never knew where any of the family were buried. That willful ignorance never made any sense to me. Beaver contemplating the Beaver Moon Rosemary blossoms ...Looking as though someone had shaken a giant snow globe, the Magic City was experiencing its first squall of the winter season. At least it wasn't brutally cold. This is the kind of snow that makes it fun to take a walk. It has been ever so amusing to watch my newest kitty, Midnight, getting so excited about those white things flying around outside. Her inky little nose has been pressed against my windows all morning. Occasionally she tries to touch the active flakes through the glass. This is her first experience with snow and she is utterly fascinated by the white wonders. My other two fur babies couldn't care less about the snow event and are participating in their morning snooze event instead. Clancey's Gift...

...The air was warm and inviting. Colors of gold and orange blazoned everywhere. Loading up all the essential equipment to help me to immerse myself into the hiking experience, I set out for Silver Creek Park. It was a trail I had not walked in many years. Too many of my hiking friends now no longer could make the trek, but I was determined to experience that trail more time. For the first time in years I dug out my walking staff to help me along the way. Strapping my fanny pack around my middle I now had some inspirational music to listen to as I walked along taking in all the sensory experiences of the trail. The sun was bright, the air was clear.
