HerbnArts

...This website is dedicated to the two passions in my life, herb gardening and living the herbal life, and to the creation of fine art through photography. After 40 years of photography and over 35 years of herb studies and gardening I can't seem to separate the two, so this is a running commentary on both and how they help to create my happy places. Hopefully I will be able to share the fun from both with everyone who reads this blog site.

Little Green Herbs...

- March 29, 2016

Sage, Thyme, and Holy Basil ....Spring 2016. Easter has come and gone, and still we are riding on the rollercoaster of temperature changes here in Ohio. Everything is greening up and the bold spring bulbs are sporting their glorious blooms in spite of the cold weather. Easter day was wonderfully sunny and warm in the 70 degree range. But as usual, Monday has turned a nasty wet, cold 45 degrees. The color scheme of the day is battleship grey. Enough already! We need some solar coaxing to leap into real spring mode. When I worked for a local bookstore I remember a co-worker telling me that she had just visited a local greenhouse nursery for just the smell of moist earth after a long winter away from the fragrance of growing green things. As soon as I was able, I, too, made the trip to a nursery to enjoy the humidity of a warm greenhouse and the smell of little green plants. Best therapy in the ...

In spurts there is a bit of sunshine today. I say that cautiously as there is more rain predicted for later in the day. Even so, the lily-of-the-valley seem to be undauntedly pushing out their wonderful little blossoms. Is it any wonder that gardeners think of the fairies in the garden when they look at the little flowers that look so much like a little lady's bonnet. And the aroma is the essence of spring itself. It is my gift to everyone at work to take in small bouquets of lily-of-the-valley to share with everyone. I am greatly blessed with enough to usually harvest about a half dozen or so of generous bouquets. One day I saw one of my co-workers sitting at a table in our lounge holding one of the little bottles that held a bouquet of the fragrant flowers. She sat with her eyes closed as she inhaled the intoxicating aroma. "You're really enjoying those little gems, aren't you?" I said to her. "Oh,...

The Duty

- May 27, 2014

...We always called it "the duty". Every Memorial Day my grandmother and mother took me along with them as they did the spring clean-up of the various family cemetery spots. They called it "dressing the graves". I was the next generation being taught to respectfully care for the family grave markers. Grandma always brought flowers from her garden and packed a basket with clippers, a scrub brush, copper cleaner and a jug of water. I learned by quietly watching what would one day be expected of me Over the years I went faithfully to the cemetery to perform the duty. Though I offered to take my cousins with me, they all declined the invitation. They never knew where any of the family were buried. That willful ignorance never made any sense to me. The duty was never a sad task. I always looked forward to the visit to the cemetery. It had been such a harsh winter i...
